Nantucket Inspired Kitchen | Custom Color Match

Here at Details, we want each one of our clients to have a kitchen that is unlike any other. We love that our custom cabinet line, Plain & Fancy, allows us to color match pretty much any piece of inspiration. We are now excited to announce that our semi-custom cabinet lines are following suit and processing custom colors as well!

In this specific kitchen, our client wanted to achieve the feel of a Nantucket cottage here in Mattapoisett. We selected soft, ocean like colors, and kept it fairly whimsical, to keep the formality out of the space. When our client was interviewed, she was so pleased that we were able to bring her dream kitchen to life. She also raved about the functionality of the kitchen. She loves how well the bar area in the adjoining room works for entertaining. It also keeps her guests out of the main cooking area. She also stated how much she enjoys the corner sink overlooking her back yard. Prior to the renovation, this space was the main doorway into the home. Everything was opened up and by doing so the house flows better and definitely seems more spacious. We are so happy to hear that we were able to create the kitchen of her dreams!

Custom Color Matching...

Do you have a paint color or piece of inspiration that you would like to see in your kitchen or bathroom cabinetry?

Here’s some information about the custom color process from Plain & Fancy:

 “Requests for custom color matches arrive at Plain & Fancy every day, often in the form of a paint or fabric swatch. Working with our encyclopedic color library, trained technicians with years of experience begin the matching process by selecting an existing base resin that’s closest to the desired shade. Using bench-top mixers, the base resin is blended with high-concentrate pigment tints, which are painstakingly measured out in 0.01 gram increments until the correct color is achieved. The resulting paint is then hand-applied to a pair of sample doors—one for the customer and one for our library—employing the same two-stage technique used on the production floor: first a catalyst is added to help cure the finish; then heat is applied to create an extremely hard and durable surface. Once the customer has approved the match, full-scale production can begin.

We’ve so perfected the Plain & Fancy custom color match system that we are able to recreate accurately almost any hue from any source a customer cares to send us, however bold or subtle, quirky or classic. Recent cases in point include a pair of well-worn (and much-loved) denim jeans; a sky-blue vintage 1950s coffee cup; a weathered gray painted roof shingle; and, most challengingly, the delicate shade found on the underside of a wild mushroom.”

Pollen, pollen, EVERYWHERE!

Tired of the pollen taking over your home?? I know I am! Yesterday, I cleaned off my kitchen counters, ran upstairs to put away laundry which took maybe 20 minutes, and came back to that relentless, gritty, yellow film coating all my kitchen surfaces. I could literally taste it in the air! I closed all the doors and windows, sat down and started "googling" for tips on how to stop (or at least cut down) the pollen in my home.               

Some good tips I found included putting an antistatic mat by the doors to capture pollen off your shoes. I also read that taking your shoes off outside at leaving them there will keep the pollen from being spread throughout your home. Something I didn't know was that when washing your microfiber cloths, do not use detergent as it stops the fabric from holding onto the pollen particles as well as it should. But, the best information I found is in this handy article from the Washington Post. So, thought I'd share it with all of you. I hope it helps you in the war against pollen!!

Bake Sale Fundraiser - Help Support the TriTown Relay for Life!

Join us and Team B.A.R.B.I.E on Saturday, May 19th, for a bake sale and a fabulous drawing to help raise money for the TriTown Relay for Life/American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in more than 5,100 communities in the U.S., along with additional communities in 19 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. We want to create a world with more birthdays - a world where cancer never steals another year of anyone's life.

Cirrus Ventilation by Best - Very Cool!

We are big fans of Best’s new Cirrus hood design and can’t wait to design it into our next project! This hood, however, isn’t for everyone at first glance. There are A LOT of questions about installation and actual effectiveness as well.

Here’s what Best has to say about all of the concerns out there:

The Cirrus hood can go over ANY cooking.  In fact, it will likely be more effective over pro gas cooking.  The reason for that is that the air is heated much quicker and with higher heat.  This makes the air rise faster (which means it will get to the ceiling and the hood quicker before escaping to other areas).  Don’t be afraid of this hood over pro cooking!  You now know why!

We all know that the Cirrus hood is not “ideal” ventilation, but instead it’s a great solution.  We all know that putting a hood that is 30 – 36” over the cooking is ideal, but the fact is (especially in an island) that a lot of people won’t or can’t do that.  This then leaves them with a downdraft only.  Not only do we know that a downdraft is not very effective, but what if they have a range in the island or even a range top?  You can’t even use a downdraft in those cases… hello Cirrus!  Cirrus is also more effective than a downdraft because all the smoke and heat are going to the ceiling (it isn’t going backwards and down…. Even with the help of suction).

You also have the benefit of LED lighting with the Cirrus, which you can’t get from a downdraft.

If a designer/consumer selects a flat bottom island hood, or even one with only slight capture area, again the Cirrus hood would be more effective.  With heavy cooking, the smoke comes off very fast and will often roll of the edges of the hood and go to the ceiling.  Once it gets past the hood, there is no ventilation left at all.  With the Cirrus hood at the ceiling, it will now  capture anything going up to it or around the unit. It uses the perimeter aspiration, which accelerates the air speed at the opening and pulls air from the perimeter. As you know, you can use inline or exterior blowers with the unit and get up to 1500 CFM.

If you are still unsure about the effectiveness… why not use multiple units?  Best has already had one kitchen dealer in TX install 4 of them.

Last but not least… How do you clean this unit? Check out the photo where the vent is open… This shows the filters inside. All you have to do is pull the panels down from the outside edge (they are hinged in the middle), take out the filters, dishwasher safe, then replace and snap the panels back up and your done.

Seaside Kitchen Design with Entertaining in Mind

This client wanted a kitchen made for entertaining! With a large family always ready for a gathering, this space needed to be comfortable and functional for all. A large island was the perfect solution to accommodate seating for at least 10. Two sinks, one large dishwasher and two dishwasher drawers make clean-up quick and easy. Which, of course, allows the clients to enjoy more time with their company. The design was to be fresh yet subtle as to not take away from the gorgeous view of the harbor. This crisp style makes the open kitchen feel that much more spacious. All the design choices and decisions were made in order to accomplish a kitchen which is just as welcoming as it is efficient.
